Overview of A3RI
The Antarctic Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Institute (A3RI)
came into being upon formal
approval by Dean Virginia Hinshaw, Graduate School, University
of Wisconsin-Madison in June 2000.
Mission
The mission of A3RI is to:
- conduct and promote astrophysical research, particularly on and involving
the continent of Antarctica;
- integrate the resources of the UW-Madison campus to bring an interdisciplinary
approach to Antarctic astrophysical research;
- exert leadership in the international astrophysical community.
Vision
A3RI will be an international leader in high energy neutrino
and gamma ray astronomy, nuclear and particle astrophysics, cosmology and
related fields. It will emphasize and facilitate all science, exploiting
extraordinary research opportunities in Antarctica. It will exploit the
mystique of Antarctica to promote science education and outreach.
Organization
A3RI is organized such that individual programs, contracts,
grants and research thrusts can be easily added as they come into being
and easily phased out as they complete their designated tasks without reducing
the overall efficiency of A3RI.
The organization chart schematically
shows how A3RI may interact with other UW-Madison departments
or similar entities, such as Astronomy, Physics and the Physical Sciences
Laboratory, in discharging its interdisciplinary research mission.
